Doing it over: The second time's the charm for an apartment kitchen

Ned Rosenthal and Susan Fabrick merged their apartment on ManhattanEs Upper West Side with an adjoining unit in 1986, turning the new flat's dining room into the kitchen of their dreams, but by 2001 its layout seemed inefficient and required renovation. David Mullman, an interior designer, razed the old kitchen and added 70-square-feet from an adjoining hallway, constructing a central island, recessing panel wood cabinets, and using ceramic tiles and countertop and linoleum flooring.
