Daniel J. Hinkley has developed a fondness for the genus Acer, the maples, by learning to identify the species native to the uplands of northern Michigan. The numerous maple seeds he observed and collected from the mountains of Nepal, Japan, Korea and other countries are discussed.

A brief description on Diphylleia cymosa, a bold-leaved perennial with two large rounded leaves per stem that blooms in early spring is done. There exists only three species of Diphylleia, an herbaceous representative of the barberry family in the world.
