Hechinger Co. on the block
Article Abstract:
Hechinger Co has announced plans to sell the 117-unit home center chain for over $500 million. No buyer has been identified, but potential buyers will have to assume $300 million in debts. Unconfirmed reports say that HomeBase is a likely buyer, since a merger with Hechinger will create the third largest home center chain in the US with assets totalling $3.65 billion. Other reports say that Sears, Roebuck & Co could be the potential buyer.

Industry retailers align with redwood boycott
Article Abstract:
A number of retailers have followed Home Depot's example and decided not to buy or sell lumber from old-growth redwood trees. Home Depot was the first to listen to the protests of such groups as the Sierra Club, Greenpeace USA and the rainforest Action Network calling on retailers not to buy or sell the redwood. Other retailers that decided to abide by the call include Builders Square, Sears Hardware, Orchard Supply and HomeBase.
