In the beginning: from reptilian creature to feathered friend, how a bird became a bird
Article Abstract:
Proto-avarian fossils found in Bavaria in the 1860s are major evidence that birds evolved from reptiles. Called the Archaeopteryx, the crow-like fossil remains had more reptilian traits than bird. The Bavarian fossils were a lucky find because fossils of fragile bird skeletons are extremely rare.

Bird species including the passenger pigeon, are extinct because of a lack of legal and ethical safeguards. Other species now extinct are discussed. Some birds populations, including the whooping crane are recovering. But 1,000 species of birds are at risk, and the future looks bleak.
