It's too expensive to use

The collectibles market has become too serious as prices of goods produced in the 1970s and 1980s continue to soar. Most merchandise can be used for a period of time and then used again by new owners. Collectibles should produce nostalgia, be fun to collect and be affordable.

It's a dirty job, but someone has to collect it - or - it can get awful lonely at the top

The joy of collecting is in the act, and even those who collect such unpopular and inexpensive items as can openers are important. There should be at least one collector for every kind of object. The pleasure of collecting diminishes when items get expensive.

Article Abstract:

People who collect as a hobby can become obsessed with their collection to the point where the hobby controls them and not vice versa. It becomes like a secret lover that takes up a part of life and creates distance from other people.
