Issues related to the use of native conifers in gardens are examined, focusing on a description of conifers as they exist in the west and the east and the benefits they provide to gardens. Conifers described include pinus strobus, or the eastern white pine; thuja occidentalis, or the northern white cedar; juniperus virginiana, or eastern red cedar; j. scopulorum, or the Rocky Mountain juniper; abies concolor, or the white fir; and picea pungens, or the Colorado spruce.
