Sweet gum and the luna moth
Article Abstract:
The striking, light green luna moth depends heavily on the widespread sweet gum tree in much of its range to food in the larval stage. The tree appeared in written records in the early 1500s, including records of Cortez and Montezuma, and remains an important hardwood in the timber industry. The moth is often cited as a victim of efforts to eradicate the gypsy moth, but its decline may result more from streetlights that distract the night-breeding moth.
