Northwestern nirvana

Article Abstract:

Forestfarm's huge catalog with more than 2,500 listings is its most striking feature, but longtime customers say the quality of the plants and the care the company shows are equally outstanding. Ray and Peg Prag launched the operation more than two decades ago is tiny Williams, in southwest Oregon, and have grown to fill 5000 orders annually with a staff of 18. They strive to offer a wide variety of quality, reasonably priced plants, first-rate packing and related services, and a catalog as entertaining as it is big.

The cloak of the oak

Article Abstract:

Live oaks and the Spanish moss that often grows on them are together a ubiquitous and powerful presence throughout the Southeast from VA to FL to TX and into Mexico. Live oaks are leafy evergreens that reach 50 feet with nearly horizontal branches spreading to 120 feet in diameter. Once prized for shipmaking, they have an almost mythic place in Southern lore, history, and literature. Silvery-gray Spanish moss, once a stuffing for mattresses, is a rootless epiphyte whose presence does not harm the tree.

Northern delights

Article Abstract:

Kristl Walek's mail-order company Gardens North offers a surprising variety of rare and northern-hardy perennials, including many plants native to the northern plains and woodlands. Walek's customers also cite her outstanding service, devotion, and efforts to develop cold-climate hardiness ratings. Formerly a civil litigation attorney, Walek founded her company only in 1992, but has already developed a devout following of hundreds in zones 1 through 5, and even farther south.
