A Putney, VT gardener decided to live with the water that flooded half of her country property by growing water-tolerant plants and flowers. The key to its survival is the application of deep mulch to avoid frostheaving. In winter, hay and leaves blanket the soil to protect it.

An island bed for all seasons
Article Abstract:
Foliage plants, shrubs, evergreens, and woody plants are the building blocks of a garden that is appealing all year long. These plants provide a framework for the remainder of the garden. An effective oval island bed composed of only six different types of plants is featured.
