Panama: Noriega refused to throw in the towel
Article Abstract:
The political crisis in Panama and a US-imposed liquidity freeze affected all sectors of the Panamanian economy during the first half of 1988. Political instability is expected to continue with or without ruler General Manuel Antonio Noriega. No economic growth is foreseen, but the international service sector, including the Canal and the Colon Free Zone, should regain buoyancy with the restoration of liquidity. Future prospects for the International Banking Center are not bright because many international banks have moved their operations from the area.
