Roger Tory Peterson: August 28, 1908 - July 28, 1996

Article Abstract:

Peterson for 60 years was a major force in the production of field guides to birds in the US. His first guide published in 1934 by a reluctant publisher, was a sellout. Peterson was not only a wildlife painter, editor and photographer, but he popularized many types of field guides to nature.

The list of dream gifts harkened back to the more naive days of childhood. They include the removal of deer and moose herds that compete for gardens, a self-turning compost pile, an end to the commercialism of Christmas, sawdustless wood, and 12 garden trowels with bright yellow handles.
