Safe finishes: what to use on projects that will be in contact with food or could wind up in children's mouths

All commonly available commercial finishes are probably safe when cured properly. Even those containing toxic solvents are safe when dry due to evaporation. Raw linseed oil, paste waxes, pure tung oil and shellac should not be used as finishes for items that food or children will contact.
