Old Spanish missions in San Antonio, TX, and the Spanish colonial town in St. Augustine, FL, are among the legacies of the Spanish empire in the South. The Lorenzo Gomez House in the Spanish Quarter in St. Augustine is now a state-operated living history museum.

Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, MD, is where more than 120,000 Confederate and Union soldiers fought in 1862. Volunteers will place 23,110 candles at the site on Dec 4, 1999, in remembrance of all the casualties.
