Solving a member's dilemma
Article Abstract:
Naomi Shapiro's response to a reader survey drew landscaping suggestions from landscape designer Sarah Boasberg and landscape architect Dennis McGlade. The house, in Lynchburg, VA, suffers from a lack of privacy and some drainage problems. Boasberg advised planting hollies, ideally Ilex x koehneana, eventually supplemented with needled evergreens, rhododendrons, or azalea. McGlade also suggested hollies, and noted that midground plantings might distract from the background presence of other houses.

A last resort
Article Abstract:
Several gardeners facing continued deer problems have resorted to shooting as the only feasible and ecologically sound method of preserving their collections. Animal-rights groups are unhappy about the decision but generally accept it as necessary, following the release of a 1987 report. The absence of predators lets deer overwhelm the ecosystem, and fencing, antifertility drugs, trapping, and supplemental feeding all have insuperable drawbacks. Culled deer often go to local food kitchens.
