The houses of two prominent 19th-century painters now operated as museums were designed and furnished by the owners to rise above ordinary decorating. The Kensington, London, house of Frederic Leighton and Frederic Edwin Church's Hudson River hilltop mansion are described.

Decades of decadence
Article Abstract:
The general public perception of decline and decadence that exists today has happened in the Nineties of each century. The aesthetic of the time turns to excess in dress, decoration, and art. The final decade of the last five centuries are compared.
