The legendary lotus: once established, this fascinating flower is also tough
Article Abstract:
Lotuses have legendary status throughout much of the world and are a lovely and easy-to-care-for addition to almost any garden. They play a central role in the mythology or religion of Egypt, Buddhism, and Hinduism, and a major cultural role in China and Japan. While having only two species - Nelumbo nucifera, native to Asia, and N lutea or N pentapetala, native to the Americas - the lotus has many varietals. It grows well in ponds, and reaches from 1.5 to 9 ft in height. Its varietals and care are discussed.

Garden reflections
Article Abstract:
Water has had a practical and symbolic role in gardens since ancient times. Contemporary society uses ponds, fountains, and reflecting pools to emphasize both architectural constructions and natural landscapes. Water lilies, reeds, and ornamental grasses can add beauty and complexity to a water garden. Lighting and architecture will also contribute to an inspiring and serene reflecting pool.

Loropetalum gains luster
Article Abstract:
The loropetalum genus is found almost exclusively in China. This Chinese fringe flower is a member of the witch-hazel family and was introduced into western trade in 1880. Researchers believe that some private collectors brought loropetalum to the US from England around 1900. The US Department of Agriculture plant explorer Frank Meyer found the plant in western and central China.
