The Archives of American Art houses over 10 million items that document US visual arts from the 18th century to 1993. A guide to the enormous exhibits is being compiled by director Richard J. Wattenmaker and his staff. Wattenmaker says the era of hand-crafted goods and documentary materials such as diaries is passing.

So much design and effort goes into the graphic arts that retailers use to advertise their crafts that they can almost be considered artworks in themselves. The image that is presented to the public through graphic art is key to the success of retailers.
