The composition of the soil is as important as the sunlight and the water that plants receive. Clay and sandy soils must be cured with organic matter to make them viable for plant life. The acidity or alkalinity of soils must also be at a level appropriate for the plants.

Plant propagation by dividing and layering allows growers to multiply their plants inexpensively. The plants that can be propagated through these techniques include Hosta, Ajuga, perennial phlox, Canna, daylily, hydrangea, rosemary and boxwood.
