Keeping your (house) cool this summer

The easiest way to cool a house is to block outside heat from getting in using curtains, shades or blinds. Exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms vent heat out of the house. Open windows and ceiling, window and attic fans can also help. Tips for improving air conditioning efficiency are included.

Tubular skylights, or light pipes, are an inexpensive, easy-to-install way of bringing daylight into a dark room. A collector dome catches light on the roof, sends it through a narrow pipe that can curve around obstacles, and disperses it through a lens in the ceiling.
