Unwelcome vistas: a designer analyzes our dysfunctional suburban landscapes
Article Abstract:
Most modern landscaping and use of plants around dwellings displays a dysfunctional misunderstanding and outright error. Cardinal sins include simple imitation, seeking to be different for its own sake, following supposed rules about what must or cannot be used where, and ignoring the plants' own nature. Simplicity, harmony with architecture, dooryard gardens, and more creative screening are all underused. The best and most attractive landscaping is that which the owner loves and enjoys working with.
