Microarchitecture became a mass-market phenomenon in the 1920s when department stores, and mail-order catalogs began selling inexpensive cardboard Christmas villages that were made in Japan. Ranging from matchbox to shoebox sizes, these structures were designed to alternate as children's toys, model-railroad props and tree ornaments.

Bermuda primeval

Nonsuch Island is being tapped as a sanctuary to preserve Bermuda's native species, such as the rare cahow, and its rich vegetation. Two man-made marshes have already been constructed in the island's microecosystem.
