Ashley Cos.'s Ashley Furniture HomeStore received a warm reception when it opened in Las Vegas, NV. Ashley HomeStore is Ashley's retailing-licensing concept that endeavors to add excitement and ease to furniture shopping using community involvement, innovative promotions and a store ambience designed to keep children and accompanying spouses from getting restless while shoppers look over furnitures to buy. The Las Vegas franchise is owned by Al Sweeney and Bernard "Buddy" Kaplan, who have a total of 81 years of experience in the furniture business. The 25,000-sq-ft Las Vegas store offers the "Refresh & Relax" area for meetings; and its warehouse for activities such as building homecoming floats.

Johnson to retire as CEO of Pier 1
Article Abstract:
Pier 1 Imports will see the retirement of its chairman and CEO Clark Johnson, who will turnover the CEO post to Marvin Girouard. Johnson said he will stay as chairman until 1999. The company is expected to formally announce Johnson's retirement in the last week of June 1998. Johnson, who joined the 764-store retailer as CEO in 1985, was responsible for changing the retailer's product mix to satisfy the maturing tastes of its original consumer base of young adults. In his 13-year tenure, Johnson led Pier 1 to growth and prosperity.
