Rowe buys Mitchell Gold

Rowe Furniture has purchased The Mitchell Gold Co., a maker of high-end upholstery products in an agreement that is worth up to $32 million for the next five years. Under the terms of the deal, Rowe will pay $13 million outright for the firm with the balance to be released based on the company's performance in the succeeding four years. The Mitchell Co., which will retain its identity as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rowe, will retain the services of its former owners, Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, who will continue to serve as president and vice president, respectively.

BenchCraft renames rattan unit
Article Abstract:
BenchCraft of Blue Mountain, MS, has adopted Natural Elements as the new corporate name of its rattan upholstery unit to better reflect its expansion to other manufacturing materials. The division, which used to make all-rattan furnitures, has ventured into making products out of sea grass and banana rush, both items from Indonesia, in October 1998. Natural Elements, which has also made products from Indonesian stone top, glass and iron, is expected to showcase its latest material, a fiber known as encheng, in the October 1998 market.
