Shaw to sell retail group to Maxim

Shaw Inds. will sell almost all of its residential retail operation to The Maxim Group under a transaction amounting to around $115 million and involving a combination of stock and cash. The acquisition of over 250 of the 300 Shaw stores, with a combined sales of about $575 million, will make The Maxim Group the top retailer of floor coverings in the US. The new stores will add to the over 600 CarpetMax stores of Maxim, which account for over $1.5 billion in sales annually of carpets, rugs, wood, tile, resilient and laminate floors.

The two-level Rug & Home store in Gaffney, SC, is considered as one of the most aggressive ventures delving into cross-merchandising of rugs and other home products. Around 60% of the 70,000-sq-ft site is comprised of rugs, while the categories comprising the remaining percentage include occasional furniture, lamps, art and mirrors. The Rug & Home store stands in a freestanding building along Interstate 85, and is a partnership among second-generation rug retailer, Robert Moomjy, and couple Rakesh and Dolly Agarwal.
