A Japanese lesson in European togetherness
Article Abstract:
A case study of the Japan Travel Bureau (JTB) demonstrates the many difficulties that Europe-based Japanese companies employing local workers can experience. JTB conducted a company-wide survey across its London offices in order to identify the company's problems which might hinder JTB from reaching its goals. Among the findings were the lack of empathy between Japanese and local workers and the lack of understanding of the local employees of organizational goals, which may be partly attitudinal and partly cultural. Several steps were taken to address these problems, including the implementation of the 'Issho-ni' programme designed to bring European and Japanese workers together, and paying special attention the language difficulties.

Personnel Economics: Past Lessons and Future Directions
Article Abstract:
Labor economics has become more than a clever set of econometric models, and has become a relevant teaching and research field at the university level and one that is wide open to new discoveries. Incentives, turnover of labor, and compensation are inherently economic questions and are best answered by labor economics research. In addition, economic reasoning can inform such nonmonetary questions, such as peer relationships, teamwork, and job norms.

Bringing Home the Lessons of Japanese Management
Article Abstract:
There was a study tour of Japan made by personnel directors. Japanese management, labor relations and industrial policies are examined. Applications to the Western organizations are considered. There are sharp differences in decision making between the Japanese and western counterparts. Japanese managers enjoy a well- rounded career development which allows many career opportunities.
