A tale of two corporations: managing uncertainty during organizational change
Article Abstract:
Communication strategies during organizational change can succeed if they properly manage uncertainty. By this logic, communication strategies fail because they were not able to handle uncertainty, which is represented by the prevalence of rumors. This association among insufficient communication, pervasive uncertainty and widespread rumor was proven through 15 structured field interviews with managers and public relations experts. Two case studies were used to highlight the important elements of effective and ineffective communication strategies during major transformations. The case studies revealed that change communication should be revelatory instead of concealing, minimize uncertainty with the help of collective planning, and promote and protect trust in a proactive manner.
