Accents at Work
Article Abstract:
Unconscious responses to accents influence how candidates are evaluated by the interviewers. The most highly respected accent in Britain is Received Pronunciation (RP) that is used on the BBC, by royalty and the educated or upper classes. The accents that are the most unpopular are: Cockney, Liverpool Scouse, Birmingham and Glaswegian. Personnel recruiters cannot afford to ignore this factor. They must be aware of possible prejudices when interviewing applicants.
