Align plans with data
Article Abstract:
Wisconsin Power and Light Co (WP&L) is discussed to illustrate how the personnel department at WP&L used scanning in order to plan long-term goals, prioritize programs, and analyze specific issues. Scanning to gather data for goal setting involves identifying numerous issues that may affect a company, its work force, or how it conducts business. Sources for scanning include reading current literature such as news magazines and newspapers, which identify trends. The data from the literature is then analyzed using methods such as a worksheet. Crucial aspects of scanning include determining and comprehending the implications of issues and then converting them into action.

Information access comes of age with online data bases
Article Abstract:
Online data base services provide an economic alternative to dealing with the information explosion. The needed equipment consists of a personal computer, a software package, and a modem. The average connect time is $64 per hour and some companies charge a base subscription fee. The number of users of online data base services is growing rapidly, and the average search requires only 10 to 15 minutes. Data bases fall into two groups: source and reference data bases, and referral data bases. Since individual subscriptions to data bases is expensive, many companies subscribe to 'supermarket' data base vendors.

Measuring production department efficiency using data envelopment analysis
Article Abstract:
Evaluation of the production department efficiency is essential if companies want to remain competitive in the world market. This can be done by employing the data envelopment analysis which is a linear programming-based method that transforms multiple input and output measures into one comprehensive measure of efficiency. However, the method can only provide the best results when combined with other performance measures. In addition, human analysis remains to be the primary component of the evaluation.
