An Update on Washington State
Article Abstract:
In 1974, Washington State commissioned a job evaluation study to assess comparable worth. In 1982 a supporting bill was introduced to commit the state to the concept of comparable worth. A bill signed into law in June of 1983 allocated money to implement a program of comparable worth over a period of ten years. Meanwhile in 1981, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees filed a claim against the state of Washington alleging pay inequities on the basis of sex. At the time of the article, trial had not begun yet. Whatever the decision, increasing awareness of wage discrimination by the public and the demands of women will create a social environment in which pay inequities must be addressed.

State leaders could force federal health care solution
Article Abstract:
State leaders may have the opportunity to resolve the US' health care crisis if federal reforms fail. Many governors have long sought to preempt the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, which allows firms that self-finance their own benefit plans to ignore state laws and operate nationally with a single health care policy, and tax companies so they can raise money for the uninsured in their states.

Article Abstract:
Women in 17 jobs like sheet metal worker, crane operator, and telephone repairperson in Michigan earn more than men doing the same jobs. This difference is most likely due to the low number of women in these professions and that more of them tend to college degrees, unlike their male counterparts.
