Are stock option plans still viable?
Article Abstract:
Factors such as the Tax Reform Act of 1986 (TRA 86) and the impact of the Oct 1987 stock exchange crash make it imperative that personnel managers understand stock options plans in their companies. Executives like stock options because of their money-making potential, and employers like them because no accounting costs are incurred when the options are granted. TRA 86 makes incentive stock options less cost-effective than in the past because the capital gains tax rate difference has been dropped. A 'bear' stock market such as the one ushered in by the Oct 1987 crash calls the value of stock option plans into question. Anticipated changes in accounting treatment of stock option plans also encourages a careful look at the appropriateness of the two most common stock option plans: incentive or non-qualified.

Child care soars at America West
Article Abstract:
There is a great need for childcare for employees who work in 24-hour industries such as the airline industry. The employees of America West Airlines work irregular hours, so the company decided to provide a sliding-scale subsidy for child care in order to make quality childcare affordable to its employees. Corporate childcare programs increase attendance and productivity, and are valuable for recruiting new employees. America West's program is centered on home-based childcare. America West checks each childcare provider carefully and provides them with 16 hours of training on topics, including guidance and discipline, child development, and interacting with parents. The child care providers are monitored twice a month for the first six months and once a month thereafter.

Child care: the off-site option
Article Abstract:
Companies are struggling with the problems of providing child care for employees. In many cases on-site child care is too expensive or otherwise not practical. Off-site child care is an option. In one case, two consultants help employees find the best child care available. Employees are interviewed so the consultants can help best meet their needs. The case study indicates that employees are more interested in quality child care than on-site programs.
