Throwing a light on seating
Article Abstract:
Revisions to the UK occupational health and safety regulations draws attention to the need to consider the hazards of poor lighting and unsuitable seating, in the workplace. Poor lighting conditions can lead to headaches and eyestrain. Lighting should give sufficient light and be positioned correctly. Back pain is thought to cost more than 5 billion pounds sterling annually. It is estimated almost 1.5 million people suffer from musculoskeletal conditions due to inadequate seating in the workplace. Chairs should be supportive, comfortable and adjustable.

Better regulation: taskforce wants more LA involvement
Article Abstract:
UK local authorities and central government could improve their health and safety enforcement, according to a major report from the Better Regulation Taskforce. The taskforce approves of some practices, including the replacement of outmoded regulations by target-setting measures and the scheme to encourage large firms to share expertise with suppliers and contractors. However, it criticises others, including consultation procedures and the quantity of guidance from the Health and Safety Executive, which it says is too much for small firms to assimilate.
