Blueprint for real open-door communication

Article Abstract:

Managers are often unaware of the problems faced by employees in the workforce, due to communication difficulties. One way to improve communications to utilize a system called "Operation Speak-easy," which is a type of meeting where managers and employees come together once a month. Employees act as presenters from their divisions, rather than the sources of concerns, suggestions, and questions during the meetings. There is also a one-month set time constraint for responding to matters, and all matters are written down so they can be referred to. The "Operation Speak-easy" process helps managers to be aware of small and large problems before they become huge difficulties.

Improve lateral communication

Article Abstract:

Companies should encourage lateral communication between departments and peers to ensure work schedules and deadlines are met, efforts are not duplicated, and interdepartmental relationships do not deteriorate. The steps companies can take to encourage lateral communication include: developing in each department lateral understanding of other departments' functions; sharing consistent and clear direction between managers and employees; and setting examples by top management.
