The union density declined from over 50 percent to less than 20 percent in the past thirty-five years due to change in the construction industry. It was argued that the unions representing workers in the industry must link sustained organizing drives to upsurges in local economies.

Not just 9 to 5: the problems of nonstandard working hours
Article Abstract:
Approximately 4 mil women work during non-standard hours, and 42% of all shift workers are in the low-paid service sector. There is little workplace or public-policy support for such women with children. This problem suggests new bargaining issues and new public-policy concerns.
