Innovation in employment relations in the Scottish spirits industry
Article Abstract:
Conventional bargaining structures seem the only vehicle to introduce comprehensive change programs to the shop-floor according to the research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council at United Distillers and Allied Distillers, two Scottish spirits companies. Shop stewards and members accepted the need for change but did not believe management was capable of bringing it about and at the same time protecting employees' interests. Projects at both companies showed the principles upon which the rhetoric of mutual gain and partnership are based are vital in mobilizing workforce consent.

Two more companies agree to employment security policies
Article Abstract:
The UK's Blue Circle Cement and British Airways agreed to employment securities policies as part of contract settlement negotiations. The labor unions involved welcomed the policies, although compulsory layoffs could happen despite the agreements. Blue Circle planned to reduce staff by 18% over five years though voluntary redundancies. British Airways (BA) exchanged a 24-month pay freeze for its commitment to a job security policy. BA also promised not to outsource Heathrow airport business if financial, service, and organizational targets are met.

Who cares? Employment and the informal carer
Article Abstract:
One in seven people in Britain over age 16 provide informal care for a sick, elderly, or disabled person, frequently at a high cost in earning or career advancement potential. Some 17% of women and 12% of men give such care, but over half say they spend less than five hours a week doing so. Only 62% of the men giving care have paid work, compared to 77% overall, and are twice as likely to have part-time work. Only 43% of women carers work, compared to 60% overall. These costs should influence govt policies affecting caring.
