Women's event affirms, "Yes we can!" (Biennial Conference for Working Women at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)(includes excerpts from speeches during the event)

The Biennial Conference for Working Women has become a highly successful phenomenon. Launched in 1984 specifically for secretaries working at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where the conference is held every two years, it is now attended by women from different levels of the organization from eight different states who want to learn how to improve their careers and achieve personal growth. In 1996, about 4,000 women attended to hear such noted personalities as feminist Gloria Steinem, motivational speaker Les Brown, playwright Connie Podesta and authors Maria Arapakis, Carl Hammerschlag, Nicky Marone and Susan RoAne. Lynne Hellmer, the director of human resources development at the university who started the conference in 1984, is proud that the conference has touched the lives of many women in different ways.

Age discrimination: is it getting harder or easier to sue?

Lawyer Joseph Baumgarten explains that a discharged employee can still file a claim of age discrimination under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) even though the replacement of this concerned individual is another employee who is also within the protected age group. This is proven by the decision of the Supreme Court in the 'O'Connor v. Consolidated Coin Caterers Corp.' case, where a 56-year-old employee was discharged and replaced by a 40-year-old person. Both individuals are protected under the ADEA. Baumgarten, who is a partner at the firm Proskauer Rose Goetz and Mendelsohn, says the decision of the court to consider the age spread should compel employers to determine first if the replacement of an elderly person is substantially younger.
