Employers of asbestos stripping schoolboys escape jail
Article Abstract:
UK safety campaigners were outraged when two brothers who employed 14- and 15-year-old boys to remove asbestos tiles failed to receive custodial sentences at a hearing in Apr 1999. The brothers, Andrew and Neil Medley, admitted seven of the 60 charges made against them and received sentences including fines and community service. The judge indicated that current legislation on the employment of young people did not allow the imposition of custodial sentences and suggested a government review of legislation concerning asbestos.

Control of exposure to asbestos in the workplace
Article Abstract:
Asbestos-related diseases are expected to continue for another 20 years even though asbestos has been banned from British building sites for more than 15 years. Workers in the construction industry have been advised to be cautious in buildings which are over 15 years old because they may contain an unknown quantity of asbestos. The Health and Safety Executive is reviewing the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations (CAWR) 1987 and Asbestos Licensing Regulations 1983 which may require updating.

Work-related asbestos deaths set to soar
Article Abstract:
A report has revealed that asbestos related diseases could cause 3000 deaths during 1995, rising to 10,000 between 2010 and 2025, contrary to previous estimates that asbestos-related deaths would begin to fall. Asbestos related cancers can take up to 30 years to develop and building workers are particularly vulnerable. Also many buildings still contain asbestos materials.
