Exit, voice and 'mandate': management strategies and labour practices of Japanese firms in Britain
Article Abstract:
A study of four Japanese factories within the West Midlands, England, found they all experienced difficulty in retaining workers when they arrived in the 1980s. Due to improvement in the UK economy they have had problems in recruiting sufficient workers in the 1990s. The workforce did not belong to a union or have any other way of informing the management of their grievances therefore they tended to leave. Some of the factories have increased job security to encourage worker's loyalty yet many workers remain disillusioned about management's failure to live up to its promises.

British manufacturing organization and workplace industrial relations: some attributes of the new flexible firm
Article Abstract:
Changes in the organization of UK manufacturing firms has caused them to become more flexible which in turn has effected industrial relations. Changes in industrial relations have occurred as the result of changes at corporate level, in manufacturing companies. Money restraints have led to the employment of semi-skilled workers who have little job security and are trained to work on standard equipment. But some theorists have suggested the flexible firm needs a core team of highly skilled workers. The flexible nature of employment is vital for modern manufacturing firms.
