Making management development a co-operative venture

Article Abstract:

The Leicestershire Co-operative Society has adopted a strategy by which the organization and its workers can develop in parallel. The strategy is explicit and relevant, is based on detailed research, and supports such key Society objectives as increasing the number of 'home grown' managers, conforming to national standards, using internal resources whenever possible, and eliminating irrelevant barriers to employee development. Strategy implementation began with the development of an organizational mission by the Society's top management, progressed through creation of workshops and training events for all levels of managers, included establishment of assessment centers for selecting trainee managers, and is about to introduce a formal scheme of appraisal.
