Partnership yields environmental imporovements at Perkins Engines
Article Abstract:
The gas and diesel manufacturer Perkins Engines launched an environmental management policy in Nov 1995 which had a major impact on working fractices and employee relations at the business's four UK sites in the following years. The project built on an existing "total quality" program, introduced in 1990, and used TQ tools, including task-based project teams, for identifying areas where environmental improvements were needed such as energy efficiency and waste minimization, disposal and recycling.

Generating trust - Scottish Power's Generation Wholesale partnership agreement
Article Abstract:
Scottish Power PLC's electricity and gas distribution and generation arm with the first pay negotiations under its 1995 partnership agreement harmonized pay structure and devolved resposnsibility for negotiation of employment terms from full-time union officials to lay representatives in a partnership council. The council used a joint problem-solving approach and was an attempt to achieve greater trust after the removal of overtime by the first post-privatization pay deal in 1993.

TUC advocates partnership approach to training

A 1996 UK Trade Union Council (TUC) report indicates the benefits of jointly sponsored union-employer training initiatives. This partnership training model can be successful even if unions and employers have different priorities. The TUC supports initiatives such as the National Targets for Education and Training, the Investors in People program, the National Vocational Qualifications, and the British government's proposed apprenticeship plan.
