The cafeteria route to compensation

Article Abstract:

Cafeteria-style fringe benefits plans have grown in popularity in the US, but are not yet common in the UK because of tax complexity, ignorance, and administrative worries. However, it is predicted that the plans will soon be used by UK firms because they provide flexibility and a way to reduce costs while providing for the health care needs of workers. Firms considering implementing cafeteria-style benefits programs should consider a variety of issues, including: establishing effective pricing structures; making sure programs address cost control, simplicity, and legal issues; and communicating about programs to employees.

Take a new career path, Ms Jones

Article Abstract:

British Airways (BA) implemented a program to provide secretaries with job opportunities in Jun 1989. The elements of the program included the evaluation of the training needs of secretaries; the implementation of a new grading system, new job titles, and new pay scales; and the use of new recruitment procedures. The lessons that BA has learned from the program include that it is important to conduct extensive consultations with all employees who are involved, and the organization needs to offer continuous feedback to everyone involved in the program and to take into consideration communication needs.
