Politics and employee benefits in the United States: what to expect in 1992

Article Abstract:

Prospects for policy decisions and legislation on employee benefits in a presidential election year such as 1992 are discussed. The issues that preoccupied legislators' minds the previous years would continue to dominate debates for 1992, especially in view of the need to impress the electorate. Among such issues are those on health-care reform, the preemption of state laws by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 and family leave. The issue of retirement security may also get its share of attention from politicians.

US legislative update under the new presidency

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration has vowed to undertake a massive reform of the health care sector. However, Democratic legislators are divided as to what approach to use in their health care reform efforts. Some advocate a 'play or pay' approach while others maintain that an incremental government-sponsored approach would be more effective. What is definite is that ERISA reform will have to be included in the debate.
