Putting a lid on disability costs
Article Abstract:
Although corporate America spends $40 billion per year on disabled employees, in addition to the $80 billion spent by the U.S. government, few employers attempt to find employment positions for these disabled workers, according to the Institute for Rehabilitation and Disability Management. The Institute estimates that employers could be saving themselves as much as 50 percent of these expenses by assisting disabled workers in job retraining and job modification. An Institute-conducted survey, to which 181 U.S. employers responded, indicates that 16 percent of these firms have implemented return to work programs. The "Modified Duty-Rehabilitation Program" instituted by Federal Express Corporation is an exception to these practices. The program at Federal Express, which saved the company $4 million in its first year of operation, is described, as are similar programs at Burlington Northern Railroad, General Motors, and Xerox Corporation.
