Recognising the unions
Article Abstract:
The Labor Government is planning to bring out a White Paper on the statutory recognition of trade unions in 1998. Some employer groups are opposed to statutory recognition because of concerns that it will lead to hostile industrial relations and instability. It is expected that the deal will be worked out after meetings between the TUC and employer groups. The TUC wants the plan to be simple, to avoid inter-union conflict, a clear definition of the covered workforce and an avoidance of harsh regulations.

Something old, something new: unions' recruitment techniques
Article Abstract:
Unions are recruiting members from groups outside their usual recruitment pool They are targeting under-represented groups of employees such as part-time and temporary workers, black workers, gays and the disabled. Recruitment techniques include one-on-one approaches, the use of employee lists to pinpoint non-members, and raising union profile in the workplace through displays, petitions, etc. The impression is one of continued use of the tried and trusted but growing experimentation with new techniques.

At your service: what unions offer their members
Article Abstract:
The British trade union movement has tried to deal with hostile feelings by adapting and such attitudes have included ideological attack on the culture of collectivism on which unions are based and wholesale job losses in the heavy industries with the most union members. This adaptation has included offering various services such as insurance, car rental, discount shopping cards and vacation clubs to members.
