Stubbing out passive smoking
Article Abstract:
It is now an established fact that passive smoking can endanger the health of non-smokers. Scientific evidence shows that breathing environmental tobacco smoke can cause lung cancer in non-smokers and serious respiratory illness in babies. In light of this, employers can no longer claim ignorance of the harmful effects of passive smoking to defend themselves from lawsuits. It is, therefore, imperative for companies to their smoking policy. It is becoming clear that the best way to protect the health of non-smokers is to segregate them from employees who smoke. A 10-point plan for successfully implementing a smoking policy in the workplace is suggested. Two case studies of how such a policy may be introduced are also discussed.

Article Abstract:
A survey of UK employers indicates 75% of those surveyed had instituted a written workplace smoking policy, a 25% increase from a 1992 survey, while still others have informal policies. Employers cited employee and non-employee health, as well as industrial safety, as the main reason for the policies. Most employers consulted with their employees or their unions prior to instituting policies. About 50% of the employers provide smoking rooms.

Smoking policies required as employers' risk increases
Article Abstract:
The Board of Trustees of the Science Museum was convicted of risking the health of members of the public because the Legionella Pneumophila bacteria may have been present in a poorly maintained air conditioning system. The implications of the case mean that employers allowing smoking in the workplace must introduce a policy which ensures that there is no risk of non-smokers being affected by passive smoking.
