Talk eased merger stress for Great American employees

Article Abstract:

A case study of a corporate merger involving Great American Bank is presented which reveals tactics leading to successful mergers and acquisitions. Suggestions include recommending companies seek merger partners with ethical standards and manners of conducting business which parallel their own. Human resources departments at companies considering acquisitions and mergers should also initiate communication with employees at both companies involved because such negotiations can cause various stresses for employees, such as uncertainty about jobs, benefits, and duties. Additionally, ambiguity should be avoided. Firms involved in merger negotiations should focus on honesty before misinformation and rumors start circulating. Meetings involving employees following the completion of a merger are also recommended, as are orientation and education sessions.

Executive retirement: change trauma into opportunity

Article Abstract:

Various studies have shown that executives panic at the idea of retiring because they gain psychic pleasure from their jobs and link their personal worth to their careers. Most US businesses do not have programs to help executives make the transition to retirement. Traditionally, US firms have not placed much value on retirees, but organizations should realize that retired executives can make significant contributions to business. Several alternatives exist which can be used to gain benefits from retired and retiring employees, including defined succession plans in which retiring executives have input into selecting their successors, phased retirement programs, and part-time employment of retired executives.
