What price deafness
Article Abstract:
An ex-foundry worker, Mr Singh, has suffered extensive damage to his hearing a result of working in a noisy environment without ear protection. The exact level of hearing loss is being disputed but it is between 50 and 55 decibels. Mr Singh has had his application for a deafness pension rejected by the Department of Social Security (DSS) because of conflicting hearing test results. Mr Singh is concerned that he is being racially discriminated against and that the DSS accepts any evidence which will prevent payment being granted even when there is considerable evidence to the contrary.

Welcome to "ICOH' '96"
Article Abstract:
The 25th International Congress on Occupational Health (ICOH), to be held from September 15-20 1996 in Stockholm, Sweden, will cover topics such as sex differences, physical and chemical dangers, organisation of work and health. According to Professor Torbjorn Akerstedt, from the Karolinska Institute's National Institute of Psychosocial Factors and Health, Solna, Sweden, tiredness is the major factor in workplace accidents. He will lead a group to look at the issue at the 1996 ICOH.

Article Abstract:
Stress is responsible for 7,500 work absences per day, according to Health and Safety Commission chair Frank Davis. The figure represents an overall industry cost of 100 million pounds sterling annually. Contributory factors to stress at the workplace include poor conditions, communications, and management. A risk-management approach to stress reduction in currently being researched and is expected to be published in 1998.
