A slight recovery in accident & health

Article Abstract:

A slight gain in underwriting was noted in the accident and health insurance sector in 1996. The modest upturn came following the twofold increase in underwriting losses in 1995 and 1994. However, premium volume fell during the year owing to keen competition, climbing down by 1.5% to $83.68 billion. Of the sector's eight segments, all but one recorded a downturn in net premiums, while five segments got boosts in underwriting results. Mutual insurers also accounted for much of the less than impressive results for the sector, recording a 5.7% drop in premiums to $31.56 billion in 1996.
