The latest data obtained from A.M. Best Co. Inc., an insurance research and statistical gathering firm, reveals that life insurance in force in the U.S. at the end of 2002 totaled 26.6 trillion dollars, up 6.4 percent compared to year-end 2001. At the end of 2002, the U.S. life insurance market was dominated by a handful of insurers, including the country's three largest life insurers namely Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., American International Group and Prudential Insurance Co. of America.

U.S. life insurance industry performed rather well in 2004 beating the expectations of the analysts. The prospects for the industry in 2005 are expected to be good. The industry may witness considerable consolidation in the New Year. The adverse effects of interest rates hike on the industry are also discussed.
