Expert systems: the missing step
Article Abstract:
The success of expert systems depends on the developer's ability to capture the thought processes of experts. Capturing these thought processes is particularly difficult in the insurance industry because of the complexity of claims administration and underwriting processes. Developers should work with mental models during the systems development process. The steps in using these models to create an expert system include collecting background information on the experts and conducting interviews with the experts.

Agency Automation: Connecticut Mutual Life
Article Abstract:
Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance studied methods to update the field telecommunications network, OASIS. The existing system was not supplying the agents with all the necessary information. Sophisticated, expensive hardware was an option. Personal computers were chosen instead. The company and agency force are pleased with the performance of the personal computers. The most serious obstacle was failure to take the necessary time to become fully familiar with the equipment and functions.
