Online risk-swapping community Catastrophic Risk Exchange is one of several products designed to facilitate risk-securitization, a financial exercise that is motivated by the insurance industry's wish to build reserves against a potentially injurious mega-catastrophe claim. Winterthur Swiss Insurance Group's Jan. 1997 public offering of catastrophe-based bonds, the first such offering, marked another significant attempt by the insurance industry to achieve successful risk-securitization.

Undervaluation poses unanticipated threats

Article Abstract:

The undervaluation of commercial property values is costing property and casualty insurance companies millions of dollars annually in uncollected premiums. The problem is extensive in large corporations, where valuations are made more difficult with the restructuring efforts and new inventory management efforts of these businesses. Insurers should ensure that they have qualifies valuation experts on their staff to provide proper estimates.
